Nail on the head

Mohammed asif on Sehwag ..

"Asked whether Asif believed he could get Sehwag's wicket every time he walked out to bat, he said: "We keep teasing Sehwag all the time arrre tere to pair hi nahi hilte, tu kya run banayga? (Your feet don't move, how will you score runs?). It'll never work against smart bowlers." "

You can score runs in Ranji trophy and Duleep trophy without moving your feet. Not in international cricket on pacy wickets, not to mention against quailty fast bowling.

  • Is he talking about the same guy who hit a 300 against his very own team?

    Moreover, Sehwag's averaging a mere 91 against Pakistan in his Test Career (9 tests, 4 Hundreds incl 1 300, 2 200's and a 173!)

Sounds like unsubstantiated mind games more than anything..

We all know that Sehwag's game is nothing about feet or smarts, but about sheer hand-eye coordination! Yes, he can go into long slumps due to his shortcomings, but when his game is on, he is unstoppable.

Having said that, I think Mohd Asif is one of the brightest, young pitchers of this generation. If he can stay away from trouble, he has the potential to be the next Mc'Grath. Pretty amazing talent.

  • Sriram,

So what if he scored 300 ? The one good thing about him is that the opposition didn't scare him. If he got in, he demolished them. Does that warrant his place in the team. I don't think so. I think he has failed far too many times for India's good. There are people in the wings that have not had a chance to prove that they are better. Gambhir is a similar mold player (only better technique) that has been dropped after good performances. I think it's time for sehwag to go, atleast from the one day scene.

And I agree, Asif, if he fulfils his promiese, will be one of the best bowlers pakistan has ever had.

    Bowlers, not pitchers...you american ! :)

  • I didn't say he shld be in the team. Of course he deserves to be dropped for umpteen reasons.

All I said was he defy wasn't a bunny to Pakistani bowling.

And yeah, the "pitcher" reference didn't strike me until now. LOL!

  • Sehwag in some ways is a different version of Srikkanth of 1980s. Patta 4 Padaati bowled type of player. Having said that, he has scored a lot of runs against a number of countries and failed against a lot of countries a number of times as well.

If given proper chances, Dinesh karthik could stabilise at the top of the order as a next gen batter.

  • one thing that was missing in sehwag is that he hardly worked on his weaknesses even when they have become public knowledge..

its ok to focus on your strengths but you should also work on your shortcomings so that you are atleast seen as adequate...

Dravid is one prime example. when he started his career, he was hardly the ODI batsman he is now.

even sachin kept working on his game for a long time....

  • yeah i second viji. why don't you write about your 'abhimaana' vidyasagar, for a change? i will give a caustic remark and we can churn out a controversy if you like ;-)

  • Hi Dinesh,

Sorry to leave a comment which doesn't have to do anything with your post. (You can cry out loud saying it's not cricket!!!) But I was going through my blog and found your comment in it to be very encouraging. I have just updated my blog and thought you would like to have a look at it.

and also I have a website in place, if you would care to visit it.

Finally, I agree with you that a past 300 really doesn't warrant a place in the team... It's your current form that matters. Sehwag had better get his act in place, whether by moving his feet or relying on eye-hand coordination!

  • Talk about taking things out of context... All I said was Mohd Asif's comments (which is what the post is about, duh!) were baseless, and pointed out Sehwag's record against Pakistan to back it up.

I don't know why this conversation is now about Sehwag's selection and its relationship to his 300?
